PARKING #1 PROBLEM:
Wilmont recently conducted a survey to determine the top concerns of our residents. People who live here probably won’t be surprised to learn that the majority of respondents said that parking is the number one problem facing our neighborhood. Other issues that need to be addressed were listed as (2) homelessness, (3) traffic/congestion, and (4) overdevelopment/density.
Searching for solutions, 60% of polled residents said they would support implementing diagonal parking as a way to ease our parking problems. Another 21% said they were unsure or wanted to find out more information about the proposal. Depending on the width of the individual street, a diagonal plan could potentially increase available parking by 30-70%.
To read the complete survey results, log onto our website at http://www.wilmont.org. Wilmont leadership continues to address these issues with City Hall. Our Chairperson recently had a very productive meeting with Santa Monica’s new Planning Director, Eileen Fogarty. They discussed our ongoing parking problems and how continuing development in the neighborhood is escalating an already-untenable situation.
If you’d like to find out more about the City’s plans for our area, come join us on Monday, March 19th at 7PM. Ms. Fogarty has agreed to address our group and listen to residents’ concerns. The meeting will be held at the Ken Edwards Center, 1527 4th Street. Free parking is available beneath the building and all Wilmonters are encouraged to join us!
NEIGHBORHOOD NEWS:
Beginning July 2007, fluoride will be coming to Santa Monica’s tap water! Although 70% of large American cities have fluoridated water, some residents have become alarmed at a series of reports detailing the newly discovered dangers of the mineral. To get more information on both sides of the issue, log onto: www.smdp.com/site/archives/011907.pdf or www.fluoridealert.org.
Wilmont residents will soon have a new and improved Reed Park. The City Council recently approved funding to expand the children’s play area, upgrade lighting and landscaping, and increase measures that discourage vagrancy. Meetings will be conducted to gather input from the community about the project’s scope and design, so stay tuned!
Parking could soon become even more of a problem for Wilmonters. Merchants on Montana are mulling plans to keep shops open in the evenings. With parking in our area reaching a crisis point, many people who live here are wondering where all those customers are going to park. While we want to support our local businesses, parking is especially critical in the evenings when residents return home from work. Wilmont is encouraging the merchants to make adequate accommodations before flooding our residential streets with hundreds of additional cars.
To find out more about these and other important issues, visit our web site at www.wilmont.org, call our phone line at (310) 840-2257, or join us for one of our meetings. We meet at 7PM on the third Monday of each month at the Ken Edwards Center, 1527 Fourth Street. Free parking is available beneath the building. To join and become a WILMONT member, send a check or money order, along with the following information:
